Joy Jot 17: Never Give Up, Never Surrender

This phrase makes me laugh every time I say it. For those who haven’t seen the movie Galaxy Quest starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Alan Rickman AKA Snape, let me enlighten you. Galaxy Quest is a Star Trek Parody. The film starts with a team of washed-up actors hitting comic conventions for their roles in the 1970s sci-fi series Galaxy Quest. Real aliens have been watching the reruns in space, believing that the videos are historical documents. When they are in danger, they kidnap Captain Peter Quincy Taggart (Tim Allen) to help them beat the bad guys. You get where this is going. Anyway, the theme of the ship NTE-3120, NSEA-Protector, is “Never Give Up, Never Surrender!”

Throughout the show, the characters reference this seemingly silly phrase as difficult situations arise. It has made it into the Hoagland lexicon of movie quotes. I use it at opportune moments like when a child doesn’t want to get up after they fall skiing, when someone is tired and doesn’t want to do jobs, or when they are overwhelmed with homework and need to push through. I am not sure it is appreciated, but it makes me laugh—and I’ve started saying this phrase to myself when I need a boost.

I invite you to try it.

Where can you insert “never give up, never surrender” in your life today?

Throw your fist to the sky and laugh! Haha. :)

You’ve got this!

Enjoy your day,

Amy Hoagland
