Joy Jot #16 Seek Discomfort

In a conversation about skiing with a friend, she expressed that there were three things she didn’t like about skiing.

  1. Lugging all of the gear

  2. Being cold

  3. Feeling out of control and nervous

I totally get these cons to skiing, but somehow, with practice, I don’t mind them anymore.

Last week, I went skiing with my family and I thought about this conversation again. As I was speeding down the hill, I thought about how accepting discomforteven seeking discomfort pays off in a big way in the skiing realm.

Because I am willing to lug the gear, be cold, and sometimes feel out of control and nervous, I get to…

  • Be in nature in the winter.

  • See the snow-flocked trees.

  • Enjoy the grand blue sky.

  • Stand on top of mountains.

  • Have friendly conversations on the lifts.

  • Feel the soft snow, like butter, beneath my feet.

  • Go very, very fast.

Last year, I reached outside my comfort zone by creating content for five hours of lectures. I felt discomfort when…

  1. I couldn’t think of anything to say

  2. Spent way too many hours figuring out what to say

  3. Worried no one would like what I had to say

But, by accepting discomforteven seeking discomfort, I felt…

  1. Proud of myself for doing something new

  2. Taught and lifted others

  3. Became closer to my speaking buddy, my husband. :)

What discomfort could you accept — even seek this year that could pay off in a beautiful way?

You are gifted, unique, and awesome — do it, live it, share it!

You’ve got this!

Have an awesome day!
